Simple enough question. Which would the learned panel choose all things being equal?

Is the Cat a more industrial engine, lower revving the smallest in the range rather than the largest in the range in the case of the Volvo (ok technically not but lower and upper). Had Volvos all my boating life and I think we are conditioned to see them as the norm, other countries would see Cats in the same way.

I understand the Cats have to be serviced by the official dealers as technical info is held onto tighter than the nuts on their dumper trucks. But I haven't heard a bad word spoken about their dealer network so possibly not a bad thing.

I welcome your comments or is their no difference?

Thanks

Application, hours, years, far more info required........

No clue regarding lower revving stuff, both 2,300 rated engines. Both engines have automotive/Industrial applications as well as marine. Weights very similar 1130 Vs 1170 kg.

CAT C12 dogged with Modine leaking CAC issues which hurt their reputation in Australia and US, never seemed to surface much here. There have been several CAC revisions and whole thing now settled down. CAT also have 'honest john' apparoach to warranty AND policy, they are great at fessing up to problems and paying when warranty long expired. Totally unlike the Green guys.

Volvo D11, quieter than C12 by a good margin, lousy exhaust manifold design, injectors still do not have 'official' Bosch test procedure. CGI cylinder block.

Owners best insurance for owners is CAT dealer attention to detail on vessel installation sign off.

AOTBE? U must be joking.
Simple answer, I wouldn't probably pay double for the Cat, but almost.

I had to google AOTBE. All other things being equal !

Are you suggesting that the Cat is a better engine? For me all other things are equal because I'm not paying any more for the Cat engines. There are other considerations of course but I'm not having to make a cost choice between Volvo and Cat.

Sorry, I should have explained a little better. Princess 50 footer, fairly new, I guess we're doing the usual 100 hours or so a year.

Henry, im a big CAT fan but what I dont like is there closed shop on info, so personally I wouldnt buy one, you would be wise to compile a list of service items for bothe engines and compare them as this would have a major contributing factor on years of ownership, I can tell you an impellers for a C15 is around £450 inc vat, ive just rebulit a sea water pump on a Sealine T60 and it was £550 in parts alone for a few bits (sherwood pump) there is only one company dealer, Finning and they DONT give any discount its one price for everyone, which really annoys me.

There is also a volvo dealer in every port of which you can choose who you wish to attend your boat in the event anything should happen, thats not the case with Finning, id also been told by a customer they wanted £150 travelling charge from Poole to Port Solent and thats before they even get the spanners out!. bet you thought Porsche were bad.
