Volvo D1-30 - coolant colours.

I have a D1 30; it is a little Japanese made Perkins 3 cylinder industrial diesel sprayed in Volvo green with a VP saildrive leg bolted to it and some dodgy electrics. Hardly next centuries technology. (Though so far it has run OK.)
 
When I drained and refilled my D1-20B over the winter. I couldn't get anywhere near as much in as I drained out, despite attempting many times with various pipes removed.
In the end I was defeated and got the Volvo dealer to take a look. I think they struggled too. Apparently, they diagnosed an air lock in the heat exchanger and recommended a new heatexchanger case with an additional bleed valve (sounded expensive to me). I have no idea how they overcome the problem.

If you do move the header tank get it as high as possible + keep it reasonably full, especially if displaced significantly to port ot starboard of the heat exchanger. There have been reports of air entering the system from the header when running the engine while healed over (header to the high side). Mine isn't ideally placed, but I dont understand the concept of running the engine while significantly healed over :-)

The plan is to mount it right at the top of the engine bay, about a foot above the engine. It will be impossible to pour anything into it in that position, but the bracket is a quick release one so for filling I would bring it out of the engine bay (plenty of scope in the hose for that). It'll probably be on the centreline, or at least very close to it.

My main concern is not height relative to the engine (the as-supplied position mounts it on the engine itself) but height relative to the calorifier, which is also mounted in the engine bay under the same piece of deck. So the top of the header tank cannot be any higher than the top of the calorifier, but I'm hoping that the calorifier coils with the coolant in them are at the bottom of the unit; certainly the in and out fittings are.
