Morning All,
I'm trying to find out some info on the following. I have an old motor boat I'm trying to get restored.
The engine is a Volvo Penta and has B20 stamped on the block. I've had a look at a manual off of ebay which covers all engines from 1961 to 91 but all the engines mentioned are AQ serial numbers, does anyone know if there is a conversion between B20 and an AQ reference number. I found a manual (in Swedish) I think on the internet which came up on a search for B20 which mentions AQ numbers again but I can't work out if there is a link between them (being in a foreign language)

Does anyone out there have any experience on this matter.

Thanks, Simon.

B20 is the Volvo engine code for twin carb and 2 liter block and is derived from the same engine as used in the old Volvo 144 cars, if I remember its called an AQ 120 which relates to the h.p.
The later AQ 140 & 160 were based on the B21 and B23 as used in Volvo 240 cars in the 80's.
I can help you with the Swedish translation if need be.

Hi Spannerman, thanks very much, you've earnt yourself a virtual beer..

/forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

The engine only has one carb....but thinking about it the original block cracked so the engine has been rebuilt, I wonder if the block came from an engine with twin carbs and was compatable with the rest of the original engine.

I have another manual from ebay which is in English and there are the following section of AQ references:

AQ105/2.0L (121) 4 cyl
AQ115/2.0L (121) 4 cyl
AQ120/2.1L (130) 4 cyl
AQ125A/2.1L (130) 4 cyl
AQ125B/2.3L (141) 4 cyl
AQ130/2.0L (121) 4 cyl ....etc

Would I be correct in assuming the one I'm interested in is the AQ120/2.1L (130) 4 cyl

If it helps at all I have some photos of the engine.

Thanks very much again.
Simon

Every little bit helps /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif I've actually got a guy in the UK who is putting the engine back in and getting her up and running again, I'm doing all the grunt work of finding manuals and parts.
We only properly started the project last week so I'm on one of those steep learning curves as they say.

I think you have the AQ105.
The engine has no overhead camshaft (I presume) and a single carb so it should be the 105 hp version.
The 2.1 and 2.3 liter types have a belt driven OHC. This is the newer type and has more power.
Lucky for you: the old B20 engines are indistructable and easy to work on.

Can I now have a virtual beer too?

It's not OHC. So looks like it's the 105 version as you say.

I'm going to bring the boat out to the Med so hopefully the climate and future TLC should keep the old girl happy for a few more years to come.

Thanks for all your help.
