Hi,,, Has anyone had or know of piston liner failure on these engines,
(1998 TAMD 73P EDC) ???.
I now have had 2 go, the first at 6 months and 40 odd hours,
the second ( same engine ) at 300 hours and 4 years ??
Am I being unreasonable in thinking these should last longer ?? Volvo sorted the first under warranty, am waiting to hear there "comments" re the current failure,

Any Help Please

Best Regards

This engine is vastly produced but leaves a lot to be desired since the 71a and b days of the late 80s, when it was introduced as the 72a 430 hp with no edc etc they had failures then on pistons etc and crank failures, I think it was down to volvo trying to get too much hp from the 6.7 litres it has, the 73pedc and 74pedc never produced the hp it says it does and that is inside info I have, the 74 should produce a healthy 480 but it did not, it has now been superseeded by the latest 75 p which I have recently fitted a pair of into a broom 44, and boy does it go, according to vp all the problems to do with cooling and mechanical failures have been genuinely sorted out so there should be no more problems.
Tell me what boat are they in, vp should really help you on this one providing they have been regularly serviced by one of their agents , althogh other forum members have had poor service from vp and they seem to take ages to do anything, it may be worth getting an independent engineer involved as they must be out of the 3 year waranty by now, uprated pistons and liners should be available to help prevent any future failures, and the edc system should prevent any engine management malfuctions related to overheating, overboost pressure, hot fuel, hot charge air temp etc, and sort this accordingly to give reliability.
I would suggest that if the engine is a wreck and beyond economical repair you re engine the boat with 75p engines, you could contact me by private message I can talk to you about it, full vp dealer facilities and prices available, also unbiased advice given, as I work on all makes of marine engines.
Lastly, they should last longer BUT if the engine has been overheated or overloaded and run for a long time like this then a failure will occur at sometime, not only to this engine but any engine.
