I have a steady drip from the back of my raw water pump. It is marked Volvo Penta 3680944 9846. The engine is 7 seasons old and the pump is the orgional.

I have a seal bought from a Volvo agent for 27 Euros and plan to replace it when I get back to the boat in France next year by removing the pump from the motor, partly off the shaft, fishing the old seal out a pushing the new one in.

I don't anticipate needing to do anything to the shaft.

Please, has anyone done the job and found it not as easy as it looks? Thanks.

I've done this a few years back on a Perkins Peram which is the same engine as th Volvo Penta 2020. Just remove the complete pump from the engine, if I remember one of the bolts is a difficult to get at, strip out on the bench, I replaced all the seals and bearings from a local BSL distributor at a fraction of the cost of the VP spares prices. The shaft was worn slightly but I still didn't get any drips with the new seal. Good Luck

I guess it varies with how good access is on each boat. But on mine getting the pump off was a struggle.
However, if it is just the seal and not a worn shaft then the water seal can be replaced without removing the pump.
Just remove the impeller and the wear plate behind it and you can then prise out the old seal and replace it.

Forgot to mention, if you go to jabscoshop.com and follow their parts wizard you will get an exploded diagram of your pump.
It may be useful if you do have to strip it down to replace the shaft.

As others have mentioned the seals and bearings etc are standard parts available from bearing distributors.

If you are concernd about the shaft wear you can sometimes obtain a double lipped seal which bears on a different part of the shaft to the original .

The marine engineer doing mine was swearing at/about the above mentioned bolt.
The pump needed a completeoverhaul as the shaft was worn too much after 9 years/850hrs.
Replacement pump was expensive, even in NL.

Re: Volvo 2020 raw water pump question - Thanks

Thanks everyone for your input. You have given me confidence to have a go.

I don't think I will be needing the double seal just yet but will be back on here in a year or two looking for a dealer I am sure. I am surprised the similar aged motor but with a quarter of my hours, had shaft wear. I'll expect more now I am on inland waterways.

I don't fancy doing more than just replace the water seal at this stage. It has just started to drip about one a second so not a real problem. There is no sign of oil so I am going to leave well alone.

I will try to do the job without taking the pump off but aware of the danger of meessing up a wearing face poking around with a screwdriver.

If I take the pump off, I plan partially remove it enough to remove the seal and then replace the seal with it back in place. The idea is not to damage the seal as it goes over the sharp bits that hold the impeller. I will cover them with tape. The drawing on that Jabsco site will be very useful.

Thanks again everyone.
