Volvo 2003 - what can I get away with?

Hi,

I've a new boat that has a Volvo 2003. I have to run it at high revs for quite some time for it to heat the domestic water. However, I've been told that diesel engines need to be run under load, otherwise the bores will polish up.

I'm not sure what the problem with polished bores is, but my questions are: -

* Will taking the boat out for a spin 'unpolish' the bores?
* Would loading the alternator constitute sufficient engine load to prevent the polishing?
* Should the engine be able to heat the domestic water on tick-over?

I look forward to your help with this - at the moment the Trouble and Strife isn't happy heating water on the gas cooker after having been persuaded that a good reason for buying the new boat was that the engine would heat the water.

Don't agree, giving it a good thrashing will certainly prevent bore polishing, although agree it won't cure it. Running at tickover won't in my experience heat the water, guess the only way to finds out is to try

I agree with Mr Birdseye, but at tick over it will take *eons* to heat the water (does on mine awayway!!!) also running at tick over for ages causes glazing on the bores, best thing todo is get a calorifier that has an element in it, or get a gas fired/diesel fired water heater (IMHO)

When I run up my engine (VP2030) I engage astern gear and leave her running against the load of the warps for about 30 minutes, which warms the engine and provides hot water. I usually run it at about 1800-2000 rpm.

A lot depends on whether your engine is sea water or fresh water cooled. If sea water cooled you will never get your domestic hot water above 50 C - and even that's doubtful - however long and hard you run your engine. Otherwise agree with previous comments.

We used to do just that on a run down fleet of hire boats.
Run them at half throttle in gear for about 20 minutes, with the mooring lines well secured.
This heated up the calorifiers fine. They will not heat up without a load on the engines.
This was done before the customers arrived. The fact that it covered any starting difficulties and disposed of the cold start up smoke screen on well worn engines had nothing to do with it.

take no notice of the "bore glazing" bollocks, we went down that road a few months ago. there was an article in one of the comics last month and BUKH categorically stated that in all the engines they have sold in the last few years, they never had this problem.
bore glazing is something you get rid of when you overhaul an old engine if you are not reboring or replacing the cylinders.
if your 2003 is raw water cooled it wont get really hot enough to efficiently warm your domestic water up, if it is fresh water cooled it shouild warm your water up if you run the engine for 1/2 to 1 hr.
start her up , run it briskly 1500 rpm and you will be ok, do it in the morning after you have used the batteries up and need to recharge them, dont bother wearing the gear box out by running it in gear, if you have flattened the batteries enough the previous night the load of the alternator will be sufficient.
