I have an annoying oil leak from behind the main crankshaft pulley. I am assuming that I can pull off the pulley and find some kind of oil seal on the crankshaft but it is not clear to me from the VP exploded parts diagram what exactly the arrangement is or what the expected parts to renew would be.

I am a long way from the boat so need to buy the parts before returning to the boat and dismantling.

Has anyone done this job or can anyone advise on the arrangement and parts? Is replacing the seal (or whatever) the relatively straightforward job it appears to be?

Thanks

Please keep us posted on the outcome on this. I have the same annoying leak on my 2003 but it's not serious enough for me to loose valuable sailing time over. May tackle it in the winter but the interim solution is an oil absorbing mat under the sump

+ 1! Drip is very small, but if the signals are there that it is failing, probably sensible to tackle it.

The seal is the the oil pump cover as in this diagram. I that right ? Part #8 ?

The workshop manual ( which also covers 2003 models) that you will find on Bluemoment at http://www.bluemoment.com/manuals/volvo_penta_2002_worksh.pdf indicates that a puller is needed to remove the pulley. Picture and paragraph #6 in the "Disassembly" section. Watch out for the Woodruff key!

It's usually possible to extract seals by drilling and screwing in two or more self tapping screws and then using these to yank the seal out. However in this case it looks to be simple enough to remove the cover and press the seal out if you prefer.

If you remove the oil pump cover it would be wise to use a new O ring, #9, behind it on refitting .. it would silly to cure one leak and end up with another! 11 Euros though.

Ah I meant to add ... my leak is coming from the rear of the crank shaft. Just noticed the OP's leak is from the front

When I thought the rear seal was leaking on my 2003T, the VP dealer said that it was almost certain that the crankshaft would have become grooved, and that a proper repair involved sleeving the crank - cheap and easy, once you've got the engine out! In the end, I found that the oil leak was from a corroded oil cooler, so didn't need to take the engine out, thankfully.

I had my VP 2003 front crank pulley off for an oil leak.It came of easily with a 3 claw gear puller.Just loosen the pulley/crank bolt & apply puller against this bolt,to save damage to crank end.
In the end,the leak was from oil sender being loose. Another possible source of leak is oil filter. Check the easy stuff first.
