Can someone tell me where the engine anode is on a fresh water cooled Volvo 2002.
My manual shows the anode above and to the left of the fine fuel filter. I removed this “anode” and promptly emptied the fresh water cooling water! It was simply a blank plug. A search through previous threads suggests the anode is on the heat exchanger but where and does anyone know the part number ?
Thanks

She\'s really gone.

Whoo. Just in time, I would say. You actually removed the anode, but apparently, she's completely vanished.
As you were correctly instructed, the anode is above left of the fine fuel filter. It is a square nut with some thread on. it comes into direct contact with fresh water for obvious reasons, so it is reasonable to expect some spillage when you remove it.

BTW: open it up in winter to remove fresh water and prevent frost damage. Squirt some WD40 in there and close again.

The anode itself is a cylinder of zinc, about 1cm in diameter, 4 cm in length, with a 1 cm thread at one end, to screw it into the plug you removed. So you just buy the zinc plug to screw into the nut you removed.

There's a service manual under http://motoren.ath.cx/

There isn't one. You don't need an anode if you are running a closed system filled with inhibitor/antifreeze - you don't have an anode in your car engine do you? The plug you removed is, as you say, just a blank but in some Volvo applications it is replaced by a nipple to give you a supply of hot water for eg boat heating. Some heat exchangers have an anode in the salt water side but, as far as I can remember, the original V-P doesn't; but if this is wrong some one will correct it I'm sure.

Re: She\'s really gone.

will removing this drain the engine I dont think so, if you need to drain it then use the drain plug just under the Starter motor, but why not use antifreeze thenit will be safe from frost. On my engine the plug that usually has the Anode on it for sea water cooled engines has the outlet pipe for the hot water system screwed into it, so has no anode in the cooling system.
