I know all the people who live in my road. I ain't going to report some one walking past just because I don't know them. On my local river I wouldn't dream of reporting some one just because I don't recognise them or their boat. Many people on the river or along the coast have traditionally made their living from a little smuggling. It is a way of life.

A little smuggling of few bottles of whisky or a few boxes of tobacco as it used to be to evade her majesty's customs is one thing. However, modern day smuggling is not just fiddling a few phones to evade VAT. It is more usually drugs. Now most of us know the misery that causes & if it was close to home one might not feel so inclined to ignore the miscreant.
So where does one draw the line? Quite simply one cannot, Unless one approves of the dug trade that is.
I know that if I see anything I would say so. Whilst heading for the Blackwater one night I saw a dark, unlit,RIB alter course to avoid me across the Gunfleet sands heading N. Shortly after I saw a border force vessel coming up the Wallet & had no hesitation in radioing the info. From the questions they asked- speed, time course, persons on board, size etc.They were clearly interested in its activities.
Looking at the above post, should I have said nothing, on the basis that it is a " way of life". Or should I have considered the kids being sold drugs at the school gate?

I’m rather jealous; nothing so exciting has ever happened to me! But yes I would have done what you did.

Well played DB; it might have been drugs, it could have been kids being sold; people smuggling and modern slavery is a big issue in East Anglia; simple to land and close to London.

Interesting read this thread, Of course after Brexit any bunch of naerdowells could of course just catch a scheduled ferry from Europe over to Ireland then walk accross the border into Northern Ireland they have then arrived on UK soil....
