I would like to know how, unless you are talking about becoming a Spanish citizen etc etc,, and I can't become a Spanish citizen because my Spanish is not good enough

Then you should learn but a residential permit doesn't require a high level of Spanish if any other than the basic vocabulary to make the application which you could have applied for anytime after 2016 when you were in Spain.

I am learning Spanish, but progress is slow. I am 81 years old

This is a serious question. What do I need to get a residential permit. Wouldn't that involve me in paying Spanish income tax, and create problems when I come back to the UK every Summer?

It wouldn't mean paying UK tax nor would it create problems on returning to the UK but you do need to have some sort of residence obviously owning your own apartment is the best solution but it should be possible for long term renting and there may be a minimum period that you have to remain in Spain. If you are serious about it there are at least 3 forum members that have residence who I am sure would answer any specific questions such as renting or minimum period of residence to gain the permit.

It looks like the residence permit is for people who stay at least 6 months and pay tax - it doesn't look like there is a Tourist Visa Extension for Spain - but I would email the Spanish Consulate in London and ask (you may have to visit them to apply if there is a visa).

Be aware that later this year, the system is automated and from that point fines and entry restrictions will be automated.

You could also email your MP and ask why the UK removed/didn't discuss the EU's better offer (as reported https://committees.parliament.uk/writtenevidence/6891/html/)

Thank you for your reply, this could be helpful.

However, I would rather pay UK income tax than Spanish Income tax. I have a girlfriend that is a Spanish resident, and a Dutch national. We spend the summers in my house here in Mersea, and the winters in her flat in Ibiza - So i don't rent or buy. However, perhaps I could buy as an investment if that helps
