Vimeo v youtube for free sailing vids - a bit of help if you have the time

Vimeo: I like the ease of downloading a video to watch later, when enabled. That means I don't spend time watching an hourglass or similar in the middle of my screen.

YouTube: Large audience

As a viewer, really I see little difference.

- How about hosting & monetising the videos yourself? It's not beyond the ken of man.
- If youTube are not working as a monetisation model, how about selling advertising space in the actual video? 'Brought to you by our sponsors, Laphroig whisky & Boots surgical supports...'

Hi Dylan,
I viewed both on my iPad, and couldn't see any real difference. Both good quality video and audio. I'd be happy watching either.

Hosting them myself is more or less what I have been doing with keeping the files on Amazon servers

I think that at one time you were in the majority - wanting to download and watch later

however, more people have fat pipes and big media tvs and they want to see them now as they want

I did a trial giving away films and placing a donate button underneath

I managed to increase web traffic X20 over last weekend

But I also managed to start a bandwidth bill from amazon that was heading for $600 a month

that would be a frightening amount

You tube delivers lots of eyes - but they are grazers rather than stayers

You tube works for shorter videos

In some ways I have enjoyed the digital journey almost as much as the sailing

as SaltyJohn

of this parish said in a recent email

Still, you’re having quite an adventure with some degree of subsidy! I look forward to meeting you when you get around to the Irish Sea.

this year has been an expensive one and expecting website income to cover the costs would be asking too much

but I am really enjoying the ride

both on the web and on the sea

Sorry, there is no video here.
Either it was deleted or it never existed in the first place. Such are the mysteries of the Internet.

Is all it said.
Enjoyed the you tube though

It really comes down to three things...

1) if you want someone else to control oyur video, and if you want them to determine were your viewers go... Then use youtube.
2) if you want to control your video, and if you want to determine your viewers experience... Then use vimeo.
3) if you want total control of your video, want to determine your viewers experience, Want excellent stats and options for embedding... Then use Wistia.

The main issue with youtube is that they will take your customer away by recommending other material to view and providing a link.... As well as embedding adverts... And controlling your audio potentially...

If your embedding in your own website, why would you want that???

For embeds I think vimeo if your not too concerned about extensive analytics or customisation.... And then also load to youtube and have a youtube channel with a link of the page... Wistia is however the best embedding option if your really into leveraging the material...

Vimeo content not working on Android tablet (says video has been deleted).

The experience I have had as a consumer of videos is that I much prefer Vimeo but I am not an avid watcher of either. The youtube video has an advert in front of it which is a bit annoying as they do not pay you - is there not a way to serve the video without ads as the couple I have put up for fun do not have ads ?

Am not an expert in this field but one observation is that maybe you should not be scared of big delivery bills if that platform brings in more revenue. There is a lot of scope to increase traffice imo by better informing the casual user when new videos are released. There is a guy whose blog I read (F1 journalist) and he simply links his word press blog to twitter and then tweets when a new post is up. There must be many twitter users who are sailors who would follow you in order to see more new content.

As a final thought, is there any reason why you should not use all platforms ? That way, with a little bit of extra effort you cover all bases.

deepest apologies

I had reset the video privacy settings

having to learn a new system so it should work now

https://vimeo.com/114060701

I have also set out a page the way they will all be

http://www.keepturningleft.co.uk/sa...rningleft-season-6-part-5-leaving-the-humber/

Now that downloads do not cost me any money I will make the films free as I upload them

so far the website is bringing in around £20 a day in donations thrugh my ever witty drop down box with five self deprecating comments on the films.

This is the third time of changing the way KTL works

this seems fairly simple so far.

Dylan,

Confirm that works fine now albeit that my totally inadequate laughingly called "Broadband" which is about 1MB download at this time of day (reaches the dizzy heights of 2MB max at best time of day) results in it being an exercise of watching the timer thingy going round and around and around. Consequently if Download goes the way of CD and cassettes then those of us in far distant rural villages are buggered......

Some comfort to know that someone has worse Broadband than me.

On a PC Bav's embed is working fine for me, Dylan's is just a "Sorry" link.

On my Android effort both are not shown at all.

Bav34's post is blank on my iPad. Nothing but his reply, no video.

Well that's odd. I posted Dylan's video on my MacBook ... Safari ... OS X Yosemite and can see the video just fine. If you hit "reply with quote" you'll see the link.

However I've just looked on my iPad and iPhone ... Safari ... IOS 8.1.1 and as per foeu I just see my reply, no video. Hitting "reply with quote" does show the link is there but no video showing.

Good luck with that.

Hold on ... just had a thunk ... a few days ago I posted a Vimeo video on one of Dylan's other posts ...

Can we all see that?

Answering my own post here ... I can't see that either on my iPad.

Let me go find the other post I referred to and see if something has changed.
