I have no personal experience of Vilamoura but I have heard that the boats are kept there in order to entertain the tourists and that you get a lot of people wandering around to look at the boats, with no security gates to keep people out.
We visited some friends who overwintered in Portimao, east of Lagos, and it was very pleasant, with an excellent secure marina. I was told that the rates for a 6 month stay were very reasonable and there were certainly quite a few live aboards there.
If i were living aboard I would certainly consider it for an extended stay.
I've never stayed on a boat there, but I've had summer hols there the last 4 years.
The marina has just been extended, even in high winds I've never seen any swell or anything untoward in the Marina.
The yacht club is fairly plush, the yard look pretty secure, I've seen them taking out fairly large yachts 45ish + footers.
All the pontoons have security gate access now, along with power.
Theres a fuel pontoon just inside the entrance.
It looks pretty accessible - although it is the atlantic outside so can get to be pretty rough. I've seen some fairly large breakers hit the beach!
I would imagine it's expensive - not many tatty boats - lots of large power craft and AWB's.
I keep my boat there all year and never had the slightest problem with bad weather.
The pontoons are for users only and there are no onlookers near the boats.
In the winter the place is praticaly deserted anyway.
Sounds fun, but are you taking the boat with you?
And who is running the business while you are away?
I think we need to know you have thought this through properly before we can comment.
Hi,
I am currently sitting in my little office in Vilamoura marina, we have Tresor berthed here also.
The security here is excellent, swipe cards for the gates and a little man on a motorbike always on patrol.
The price for your boat would be 5,371euros plus 19%iva, 16 September 04 to 15 June 05.
It is the Atlantic so can sometimes get a bit swelly, but it certainly wouldnt cause you a problem. Today is a bad day and it is no more than 2 metre swell. Normally it is fine, predominant northerly winds keep things under control.
If you need any more information, I will be at Mercury next week.
Would you like me to bring you a marina book?
Cheers
Trazie
I was also strolling around the marina a month ago, and I agree with everything that Fatipa says.
I have also got to know Lagos and Portimao. Portimao is a pretty location but it is a long way away from the shops.
I also don't know how deep the approach canel is, but I have seen some very big boats going up there and I doubt it is less than 2 metres at low water.
I met a yacht owner in Lagos, and he had moved from Vilamoura because of the managements "couldn't care less" attitude
I would like to correct one point - The train from Faro, which takes about an hour and half, does not "go right into the Marina", just alongside.
Of the three marinas I prefer Lagos, because it is right in the middle of a working town with the local Dolcie Pingo (Sainsburys) next to the marina.
Hi,
Have to agree with you, lagos is the best place but we moved the business to Vilamoura for commercial reasons. I still live in Lagos, my apartment is across the road from the marina.
The approach channel is fine, we get some big yachts in the marina with deep keels.
Cheers
Trazie
Hi,
I will bring marina book to Mercury for you.
The marina is very safe, thankfully the swell stays out in the Atlantic.
Will speak to you at Mercury
