Have looked at Frank Singleton's recommendations - Navtex Toulon - but would like to check on recent personal experience. What VHF and when for weather Marseille across to Italian coast?

The French Coast Guard transmits a weather forecast every four hours on VHF ch 23, 24 and 27 (depending on your area). It is a manual transmission starting in French and then English. The English is perfect but will be heavily French accented and the accents will differ with the operator. If your French is not good, you might have a better chance of understanding the Italian forecast as that is "computer generated" and you will quickly learn its' accent as it is a constant.

The Navtex forecasts from France and Italy are excellent and pretty accurate, although we often find the Italian outlook to be less so. The looped Italian forecast on Channel 68 is the same words as the Navtex, but it covers a larger area. The Monaco radio broadcasts may not be heard as far as Marseille and, as Lady Jessie has suggested, they are very difficult to understand in English. We found the French easier to follow. The normal French broadcasts are good and not terribly difficult to follow if you have some French and a weather dictionary.

We struggled to pick up any kind of Navtex in the Med - never got Toulon at all. But the VHF service was excellent, especially the recorded, looped VHF
