VHF radio range exceptional on Sunday off IoW

Hmm - we need to check our setup then - because we only heard solent CG on sunday - and not a lot of other traffic ....

Of those, only Swansea surprises me, in Portsmouth Harbour I could frequently get Brixham. From my roof in Portsmouth french traffic is common.

That's a usual lineup for us in Poole as we are farther west and one reason why the DSC alarms are such a PITA as the range for their digital signal with no competition from lots of other transmitters as on Ch16 is even greater. High pressure really extends VHF range apparently and we once made a link call (remember those?) from L'Aberwrac'h through Lands End Radio, that was on our last boat with a much lower mast/aerial height too. Fortunately now we can switch off DSC and can listen to all the radiochecks in peace! We even heard Solent CG give a radiocheck to someone as we came out of Chenal Du Four last summer, just to remind us our cruise was nearly over.. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Right. Now the Solent has the best marinas, biggest boats, best sailors, and, claiming the best VHF signals.
You blokes really think the sun shines. Bah.

Ok, here it is.
I was speaking to Somali Pirates on their handhelds in the Red Sea, whilst I was anchored up Yokesfleet Creek. I even did a Mayday Relay with the Finnish Coastguard and a boat off St Peterburg, using only my Midland PMR,whilst listening to Moscow world service on the newly installed cats whisker set, using only a coat hanger and some piano wire.

Ha, that'll sort you flash buggers out.

well - we liased with an Alien spaceship using just a yoghurt pot and a bit of string ....

Whats clever in that - thats just plain old telephony. You would do better with a Bournville Cocoa tin, more resonance and a far better mid range.

Airwaves man, airwaves!

Radios on the East Coast? I thought you were all on Aldis lamps in that neck of the woods.

Aldis lamps? We still light fires in the beacons, and rely on swinging lanterns. I suppose you lot rely on electricity?

Not so unusual, we have in addition to the ones you mention, at the same time heard Dover, and on one occasion, crossing the channel got all the above plus Channel Islands! we were beginning to wonder who we would hear next.

Think you might have misheard - are sure it wasn't the Romford Navy in Pitsea? Easy mistake to make when you're using piano wire etc /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
