VHF or mobile? Discuss

Was it a planned assault? Sounds totally bizarre. Winter? Inflatable mattress? Mad enough to have fixed VHF on board.

Darwin Award? He is in a very long queue of numpties at Cramond. RNLI Queensferry almost run a tourist trip boat in the summer. Stupidity in the extreme, lots of tide time warning notices. Local kids party there in summer, not wanting rescue. This fella was suicidal in going there in winter; why?

I’ve been - and whilst there are tide warning signs I actually don’t think they are that helpful to the uninitiated. I’m sure I’ve been on other causeways which were much clearer.
I am impressed that after being in the water his phone still worked. Was it in a waterproof pouch?
Modern iPhones (and presumably the high spec competitors) not only survive a dunking but can be used for shallow underwater photography - until you damage the screen etc.

Sort of activity that comes from a bet the night before?

Most (err, many?) modern phones are waterproof. Even my first-gen iPhone survived a dunk with minimal after-effects. The bigger issue is water droplets confusing the touchscreen.

Darwinism fail at this attempt. I hope RNLI dont risk their lives or their resources on this nutter again
The RNLI luv a shout, ask them, especially to a nutter in distress It gives them something to tell the wife/husband when they get home, plus an interesting subject in the pub while chatting, and chewing the fat, whilst enjoying a pint.

My mates are in the coastguard and Severn area rescue (sea and cliffs/rock faces), and they are stressed by the requirements and upset when all fails. They sanitise the reports sometimes and a flouncy suicide attempt is publically described as a fall for instance

I would sooner they only had to deal with unavoidable accidents , though these are fairly rare if all precautions taken. PS I have had my share of mishaps in my 45 years sailing and mountaineering so I accept we all can make misjudgements - I just try and not do anything so silly as to actively invite mishap (except possibly skiing and that does not involve CG or somilar)

I have a relatively late model Samsung ... and I can say without question - it is not waterproof ... not even close !! The charge port - USB C - is open and already I have had trouble with it after dropping it in the snow.
