as some of you may know, the boat we have just bought was imported from america, the VHF hasn't been changed so will still be on american frequencies, will 16, 81 etc. be any different? we haven't tried it yet as our electrics need a major redo.

I'm sure what Mike meant to say was not "you'll have to dump the radio", but that "you'll have to dispose of it in an environmentally friendly fashion."

Depends on the make and model of the radio. Some sets can switch between European and US channels (Some of the channels are identical anyway by the way) and some sets have world wide (almost) approval. Skanti, (for example) have a key combination that switches from UK to US channels (I know because I have had to use it, and yes I had to look it up, when we arrived in US waters). So check the make and model and perhaps phone the manufacturer before you dispose 'in an environmentally friendly way'... Call me a cynic, but if you phone a dealer, they might automatically say 'best get a new one' because there's the possibility of a sale...
