Just fitted a new DSC Silva S15 VHF Radio.

It does not have an inline fuse supplied with the power cable!

Called their technical Dept and they say it does not need one! but if you want to fit one put a 10.amp fuse or circuit breaker in line!

I have given the radio a clean 12v supply wired straight back to the battery and I an uneasy about it not being fused.

Any technical bods out there got an opinion?

Thanks in advance

Barry

Yes thanks for that, I am thinking the same way! But I would like to know if there are any experts out there that think silva are right and its not worth fitting a fuse?

Maybe it's because a 'normal' installation would be through a panel with trips? Thereby not needing a fuse... Agree with your way up to a point. If we don't trust a switch/trip panel, where do you stop with direct battery connections though?

<hr width=100% size=1>my opinion is complete rubbish, probably.

We would always recommend putting a seperate fuse in the supply line somewhere as close to power source as poss. The only reason I can think of for not having additional fuse inline is that it has some sort of internal protection ie. some sort of diode. This means a trip to a radio fixer or back to menders if at some future date mebbe in a hurry the battery terms get switched and poof.......

Isn't there something in BSS regs: that says ALL electrical circuits should be fused (somewhere).

Methinks Silva say that their radio doesn't need a fuse to protect IT, but sure as hades your batteries and cables need protection against a short.

Go on do it, you know it makes sense.

I seem to recall somewhere that I read you should have at least one VHF linked direct to your 12v supply so that it has a clean supply and if anything trips out your fused panel you still have a working VHF. The only reason for it to stop working would be battery failure.
