Amazing how many hams are also into boating, I was just about to start learning to fly when we had to leave Libya, so think that's one box I won't get to tick lol. Thanks for the license info, think I would prefer a classroom set up so will see if any local clubs are running a course.
Do a google for VHF Radio course West Wales. Loads!

A person with a license while on a boat may supervise someone who does not hold a license to make radio calls, In an emergency anyone, whether supervised or not ,may make radio calls.
Thanks for your input, Ofcom got rid of the ham radio license, so think they must have bigger fish to fry, will do it properly but as in all walks of life you get the chancers lol

The Ham radio licenses are still required. Maybe you are thinking about CB licenses????

Sorry I meant to say once they stopped charging for the license standards in my opinion seemed to drop, you are correct you still need to validate your license but its free now, sadly Ofcom dont protect the bands against so much man made noise by false ce badged crap from overseas

Just done the RYA VHF SRC and got my theory certificate, not that difficult, now to do the practical and exam when I'm doing my PB level 2 in a couple of weeks.
Been a radio ham since 1980 and installed MF/VHF radio telephones on boats and ships a very long time ago for Decca Radar.

Dont get me wrong. I think it is a very useful course and in am emergency you will operate the radio with confidence and more quickly and efficiently because you have had practice. You may also need it in other countries if your boat is carrying transmitting equipment. In the end I think they will job the whole lot out to the RYA . Ofcom are always under pressure to cut costs.

I know people that have not got a vhf operator license but had no problem requesting a mmsi and call sign.
Ofcom online does not ask if you have a license.

I have a G call sign, there were a few of us that all went through it together, my younger brother at the same time was doing his Radio Officer's ticket at Leith Nautical college, he never went for a ham licence though.
I started work for Decca Radar as a trainee way back in 1972 and went to Decca headquarters in Croydon for the radio course, our only complaint was that after all that training we were still not allowed to actually transmit with the radios when we were installing and setting them up.

Now all I need is a boat...
