Vetus sea water strainer lid stuck - tips and techniques pls

Very familiar with this issue, we had it during the summer when weed blocked our engine intake and originally we thought the filter was blocked. I now have the vetus Red Cross device.

The crack sounds ominous. The lid needs to keep a tight seal to ensure that water is drawn up rather than air sucked in so it may be worth checking you still have a reasonable flow of water to the engine.

We tried many things. For me an old trusty rope helped. I was able to wrap it round the lid with the knot pointing so it tichtened and pulled as you yanked on it. It took two of us but we got it off.

Full details of everything we tried, and the tribulations we had, below:

And then how I got it fixed:

As Captain Ron would say, if it’s gonna happen, it’s gonna happen out there!

Ok I had one of these on my other boat , YES right pig to undo , I ended cutting a X in a piece of ply wood , then putting a few screws in here and there ,
All I had to do was to place the ply wood X on to the lid then use a long screw driver between two of the screw to lever the top open .
Have I explained that properly so you can understand ?
Properly not :)
Great tip, mine is not an x just a raised shoulder but I cut a slot in a piece of plywood and it came off really easily, thanks!
