I have 12V Vetus Ajax anchor winch that has given sterling service over the past years, having had power to retrieve the anchor in winds where the 7 tonnes of boat should really have had some motoring ahead to have relieved the load.
Now I have paid the price. I have noticed over the past months particles of a grey, plastic disk that sat under the bronze meshing cone have been breaking away. Then recently, embayed by a strong wind and raising anchor to seek better sanctuary, the disk completely disintegrated and the winch lost all power.
Disassembling later I found grey powder and particles of what I believe are the remnants of the disk at the base of the winch. I have fabricated an interim replacement out of some discarded perspex, which has restored the functionality but not the power - presumably the thickness and perhaps the material, was critical to the correct pressure and power transfer between the drive cone and matching gypsy.
As I am still on board and only intermittently connected, I have not been able to source proper Vetus spare parts so I would appreciate any advice as to the purpose and details of this component. Thanks for any input.
