Following good reports from this forum I have installed a Vesper AIS. The manual advises that once up and running you should change the WIFI password but does not say how to do this. I have messed about for ages and searched on google but cannot find how it is done. Has anyone cracked this problem?

Thanks. I have already gone through that lot and cannot see how to change Wifi password

So doesn't this work?

Just type your new password into the password box and save it.

I've changed mine many times when experimenting although some things can be done over wifi and some things must be done using a USB cable and some things can be either. I think password changes have to be done over USB cable, presumably to stop anyone doing it remotely and locking you out.

The web information you referred to states
"You can change the SSID or password by using the vmAIS Configuration and Status Utility on a PC, Mac or Ubuntu computer. Vesper Marine recommends you change the password. To do this, download the vmAIS Configuration and Status Utility and install it on your PC, Mac or Ubuntu computer. Use the USB cable that is included with your XB-8000 transponder to connect to the PC."
The trouble is I dont have a PC , Mac or Ubantu computer to do this with. The blurb led me to believe it could be controlled via my Ipad - which I why I selected it. Also there is no USB cable provided with the unit - see the link below which shows everything that is included

So at the moment I still cannot change the password. I have messaged Vesper and am awaiting an answer. ANy further thoughts

I see .... if you can't connect by cable that's a bit of a gotcha.

Any USB cable will do ... plain USB A-male at one end and the small USB male at the other. It's the older small mini-USB rather than the newer micro-USB.

If you can borrow a laptop from someone it will only take 2 minutes. However, if you can enter the MMSI and boat data over wifi (I can't remember if that needs a cable) then I'd just forget about the password for the time being. Mine has actually been on the default for the last year as I couldn't be bothered to change it and I probably never will.

You might be able to do it using a tablet and a USB cable (depends what port your tablet has but you might need an OTG cable) but I've never tried that.

The firmware updates are done over wifi and that's the only important thing you are ever going to need to change once you've got it set up.

Yes, the XB-8000 comes with a short USB cable for this purpose. See http://www.vespermarine.com/transponders/xb8000-ais-transponder.html/#specifications. However, if yours got lost somehow you can use another cable as RichardS has described. You need one with a Mini-USB plug.

You can do most any configuration you need with an iPad but to change the WiFi password or upgrade the firmware it currently requires a PC/Mac/Ubuntu. And yes, we did that to prevent someone locking you out although we are considering whether that's still necessary in the future.

But that's a router password change not an XB-8000. Although the principle is the same, every wifi router I've ever seen can be password changed over the wifi connection but the whole point of this thread was that the XB-8000 cannot be changed like that (or couldn't be a year ago).

On second thoughts, are you a real person or a bot? :ambivalence:

I get your point. I will just have to borrow a laptop from someone.

Yes, I set mine up with an iPad, but only the PC/laptop configuration utility does the full monty. Had me scratching my head for a while too.
I am finishing the set up with my new lap top Saturday!
