The windows on my Feeling 1090 have a plywood suround inside which has a veneer. The windows have obviously leaked in the past and now the veneer is lifting, if I removed the veneer, is there anything on the market that I could replace it with ?
Thanks

Hi Pladda!

I suspect you actually mean you wish to replace the veneer only, not the ply. If so, you can buy a variety of different wood veneers that are bonded to a special 'paper' for stability and ease of handling, that you simply(!) cut to size, and glue onto the dry, prepared, existing plywood. You do not have to remove the paper backing! A friend of mine has just done this on his boat very successfully, and used cardboard templates to ensure a good fit.

I know the company he bought it from is based in South Wales (I think it was Cardiff) but don't know the details.

I'll get hold of him in the next couple of days and post the details here.

Hopefully, someone else will know the company and beat me to it.

Sorry I can't be more specific at the moment.

Good sailing!

John,

I'm doing exactly the same job on my boat (a Feeling 720) at the moment!

I suspect that the problem on my boat is caused by condensation rather than leaks. I'm replacing it with veneer which I got from Vale Veneers (www.valeveneers.co.uk) A sheet about 8ft long by 11" cost £12.00. It'll do my windows and a few other jobs as well. The veneer can bend round most of the corners without any problem, but I'll steam it to go round a couple of the really tight corners. I'll stick it on using contact adhesive and probably give it a coat of epoxy to waterproof it to prevent/delay the problem occuring again.

Odds are that your boat is finished in elm. If you need a sample to check then let me know and I'll send you a bit.

My next job is to get a suitable varnish to match up what is already on the boat. (A very clear matt). Any ideas?

Joe

Hi Pladda,

My friend has kindly supplied the info re the veneers as follows:

"The firm was Winwood Products in Cardiff - 029 20540033 - www.winwood-products.com - and a very helpful chap called Steve Atherton. In the end I couldn't get the paper backed version in Khaya Mahogany since this was not popular enough, so I've had to buy conventional layon panels already 'stiched' together to my required sizes. "

Hope you don't need Khaya Mahogany(!) and that this helps.

Good sailing!

For the varnish, you might try Ronseal (I think) water based stuff, I remember using some a while ago, and I think it was quite clear.
That said, I'd get a small pot first and test it on some scrap. It dries as hard as nails and is a sod to get off if you don't like it...

Hope this helps.
Robin.
