I suppose you mean visibility on MarineTraffic or similar web sites: the boats have variable installation, antennas up the mast or on the transom, some have activated message 27 others have not --> some can be seen consistently better than others which do not or seldom appear as their sat-AIS signal is poor.
On the way down the Atlantic, Sam D mentioned that Clarisse's AIS was not transmitting. They were having to radio each other, overnight, whilst duelling for position. To avoid collision. And that was at the start of the race. Since then multiple boats have lost masthead instruments (Juju, Nico & Boris spring immediately to mind, but I know there are more)
