Today - Charlie's dilemma.

The race gets even more intriguing this morning.

Overnight, Dalin has maintained his 230M lead over Ruyen but Burton, who has been nibbling away at the lead for days has bitten off 50 more miles overnight and is now only 175M behind.

[EDIT: This is despite Dalin sailing 26M more distance over 24 hours!]

(It has taken Burton a bit longer than I predicted to make up those 80 miles but I still feel unconscionably smug! :sneaky: !)

Burton has been sailing in bigger winds and seas overnight but has managed to keep his boat speed up impressively. as yuo can see in the picture, the worst of the weather has passed to the East of him and he now can chase the edge of the storm in easier conditions. This has allowed him to set a course directly East for the Kerguellen corner while Dalin is pushed further North by his strategy of keeping out of the worst of conditions. As a result, although both boats have being doing similar speeds of around 16 kts, Daling has a VMG of 16 kts over the last four hours. Dalin has a VMG of 8. A difference of 8 knots.

8kts x 24hours = 192M ......... which is Dalin's lead.

Of course, this disparity will only continue as long as Dalin allows it. And that is Charlie's dilemma - when to head South towards the Kerguellen corner. The longer he leaves it the more of his lead Burton will chip away. The earlier he goes, the worse the conditions that he will encounter.

The big lead that he has built up has given Dalin the luxury to make conservative decisions. If he sticks with this strategy, then Burton could have chipped away another 25-40 miles from Dalin's lead by 2100 tonight.

The game is very much on!

I'm beginning to wonder if there's now too much debris floating around even the Southern Ocean to require a fundamental rethink about the Vendee Globe and the type of boats that can sail it.
Is it debris or whales?
As AT said before the race despite 500k + miles under his belt he has never seen a container, has seen hundreds of whales. If the eco warriors start shouting about being unkind to whales the PR will make sponsorship even trickier to find. Then again there could be any amount of forest debris washed out from logging operations all over.
AM just hoping that no one hits their head or the like in one of these collisions, its a horrendous thought, to be severely incapacitated in a fully powered up IMOCA boat!

It is not just this race that is shows up the risk and amount of debris in the Ocean and seas. Around our shores I am aware that many boats are in contact with "stuff" that impedes progress; It is particularly dramatic down there, where help is not close to hand and the sea state coupled with the speed of the yachts increases impact damage.

My mistake. Apologies.

2nd oldest.

Not sure who has the oldest. ?????
That would be Alexia Barrier. The 3 oldest boats are

Alexia Barrier - TSE 4myPlanet (ex famille mary, initiatives coeur, le pingouin) launched 1 March 1998
Pip Hare - Medallia (ex Armor Lux, We are Water, La Fabrique) launched 3 july 1999
Didac Costa - One Ocean (ex Kingfisher, Educacion sin fronteras, Forum maritim catala) launched 2 feb 2000

Poor Sam Davis, hitting something at speed. She's lucky not to have been injured. Just imagine if she'd been standing on the foredeck changing a headsail. She would have been catapulted forwards and maybe off!

Well I had in mind encapsulated keels and no foils.

⚓

In all seriousness we can't have a sport where whales are routinely being hit by these blades at 20+ knts. there won't be any sponsors and it may have further impacts on boating elsewhere. They are going to have to clean up this sport I think. It is sad because it is such a thrilling spectacle but it has turned into a lottery as to who gets all the way around without hitting a whale.

We don't even know it was a whale that these boats have hit. It's pure speculation.

In fairness it has always been a lottery, and the teams (and to some extent skippers) get enough chances that they can play that game. As a well funded campaign it is better to be in a boat with a shot at winning but a decent chance of crashing out than a boat which is more likely to finish but has near zero chance of winning.

Sometimes it’s best to ignore people who are trolling. Remember that trolls feed off the indignant and angry comments that they produce from others. Pretending that something was ‘only a joke’ when there was no hint or emoticon is no defence.
I know exactly what you mean, John. We will shortly find out whether Future Plc also appreciate the veracity of your observation.
