Today - Charlie's dilemma.
The race gets even more intriguing this morning.
Overnight, Dalin has maintained his 230M lead over Ruyen but Burton, who has been nibbling away at the lead for days has bitten off 50 more miles overnight and is now only 175M behind.
[EDIT: This is despite Dalin sailing 26M more distance over 24 hours!]
(It has taken Burton a bit longer than I predicted to make up those 80 miles but I still feel unconscionably smug! !)
Burton has been sailing in bigger winds and seas overnight but has managed to keep his boat speed up impressively. as yuo can see in the picture, the worst of the weather has passed to the East of him and he now can chase the edge of the storm in easier conditions. This has allowed him to set a course directly East for the Kerguellen corner while Dalin is pushed further North by his strategy of keeping out of the worst of conditions. As a result, although both boats have being doing similar speeds of around 16 kts, Daling has a VMG of 16 kts over the last four hours. Dalin has a VMG of 8. A difference of 8 knots.
8kts x 24hours = 192M ......... which is Dalin's lead.
Of course, this disparity will only continue as long as Dalin allows it. And that is Charlie's dilemma - when to head South towards the Kerguellen corner. The longer he leaves it the more of his lead Burton will chip away. The earlier he goes, the worse the conditions that he will encounter.
The big lead that he has built up has given Dalin the luxury to make conservative decisions. If he sticks with this strategy, then Burton could have chipped away another 25-40 miles from Dalin's lead by 2100 tonight.
The game is very much on!
