Vendée Globe 2016-2017

I was calculating time...
77 miles or 8 hours at 12 kts aftr 66 days... And yes there is another 4" of the 100 m course.

Now, we all know, especially as we are all (mostly sailors) thet no one would wish a mishap on anyone... but Alex has suffered damage with a broken foil and that incident with the G1...

In treating though is that he seems to be about 10 hours behind most of the time. The distance varies but as they pass through calm areas the time difference seems to be fairly constant.

Naive question of the day.

Does Armel know Alex has a broken foil?

If the ethos is "one man alone" then really he shouldn't should he?

It might help him phsycologically, especially if there is a forecast of port tack ahead and knowing when to really push.

Also, as we are almost getting to a form of match racing, it may influence his routing.

Just a thought.

I think they have the same tracking as we have..
Certainly four of them managed to meet up in the middle of the Southern Ocean for Christmas day... remarkable given bow big the place can be.

The ethos is not "one man alone", or else they would not have satellite communications. If you want "one man (or woman) alone", look to the Mini Transat where the only communication devices that are allowed are VHF radio and SSB receiver. You get to talk to people within VHF range and that's it.

This really is getting close... but just clicked on something on the Vendee Globe App (in Android) that I'd not seen before..

When in map view, clicking on a specific boat shows the position, name, speed, VMG etc.. but that's all I'd ever clicked on. I had never noticed the red 360 degree icon on that pop up.. Clicking on it brings up a close up 3D image of the yacht itself sailing along, including the appropriate waves and sailplan!... Apologies if I'd just missed this earlier.

On the live Facebook chat Alex did on Friday he mentioned something about a big homecoming and details would be announced very soon. I wonder what's planned and I hope the BBC report it.

It would be great to get down to Gosport in our boats and ashore to support him. I see no reason why he wouldn't sail the boat back from France with his team. Only a short jaunt in a boat like that.

Thanks, that was very interesting. Wish I'd known earlier for the rough days!

Only problem with using it was that it froze everything. Had to "Ctrl+Alt+delete". Hmm.

I gathered he was straight off to the Caribbean to go sailing with his wife and son!

I'd love to welcome him in, but it's a bit of a long way and Khamsin is still on the hard!
I'll be with him in spirit.

I heard him mention the sailing holiday wasn't until March so plenty of time to bring Hugo Boss back to Gosport.

17.00 update - Better VMG than Armel. Come on Alex!

You wouldn't be wanting to do the Channel at this time of the year, not solo without Radar and AIS anyway. Those ships come at you from all angles, especially when it's foggy.

No, better off waiting til June with the longer days so you can be sure of getting across the shipping lanes in daylight and don't forget to prepare a thermos in case the weather turns.

Are we talking about the same boat and skipper?????

Just wondering about the next 48 hours... I am not sure where they should go. I was inclined to think west for Armel until 24h ago, but I am at a loss now...

What I am really wondering now, and we should know in a few days, is whether Armel has been sailing carefully and will take more risks or whether Alex is really faster on his boat. I really don't have a clue. I am torn now, I really want Armel to win it, considering his past performances, but Alex had such a great race, that he deserves it too.

In a straight line drag race on Starboard gybe you would have to favour Alex - especially given the speed advantage he was able to show on the way South at the start of the race. The last 2500 nm won't be that simple though, so it is anyone's guess, although if Armel tries to sail it defensively I suspect he will lose. Either way its going to be very close, and they are both deserving of the win.

What I meant is I am wondering whether Armel was not sailing full speed knowing that it was a long race, or whether Alex was genuinely faster.
