Vendée Globe 2016-2017

Hum interesting. I kind of like the gis url, but the forecasts on the VG website seems to work better for me when trying to analyse next moves. I thought that they would have to change tacks when being offshore of Spain. Let's see how it ends up being. Another week of this and we'll know hopefully.
But I found the coverage on this forum brillant thanks to you guys. Well done.

AT just isn't keeping up with ALC in the same wind now. Perhaps HB isn't as quick as we first thought and ALC was holding back?? Marathon not a sprint afterall.
Come on Alex, this is the time to push!

The latest news of the site seems to suggest that Armel is somewhat rattled. It still looks as though he has a slight wind advantage but it looks like Alex might have the advantage again soon. It will be interesting to follow the finish.

Understatement of the century!

I'm so engrossed in the race and all of the postings on here. Although I want it to be Alex that gets home first, I'll be sad when it's all over.

Whoever gets the line-honours, I hope it's through sailing skill and not a significant breakage or collision with UFO. Honours to both A & A, and to all those who set-off 60+ days ago.

Plenty more hours of tension yet :encouragement:

Aggghhh.
Armel has increased his lead by 40 miles in the last 24 hours, 20 of those in the last 4 hours.
Eric has pulled away from Conrad a wee bit and they should both round the Horn tomorrow, hopefully while it is light.

Rich Wilson continue to nip and tuck with his group, still at the rear but at one point today he briefly took 13th place but at 1800 GMT had slipped back again. RW is a real inspirational chap who has set up a worldwide schools programme that uses the Vendee not just to inspire interest in sailing but also to educate kids in science, engineering, environmental matters etc. He has managed to recruite a whole load of experts to facilitate and support the programme. Top Bloke.

Well there you go, and I thought he was just "the oldest competitor" with a similar name to mine !!!
Well done Rich

Are these Class A or B AIS or are they satellite tracker units?

......and so I go from checking 4 times a day to hourly - eek ;-)

I imagine it's terrestrial. Marine Traffic are providing the data. Can't see VG being very happy about this, but nothing they can do.

I feel that the expected advantage that HB might have over BP on starboard, willl only be noticed when the wind is well aft of the beam. Unfortunately, the current winds are NE'ly, giving a TWA of only around 70 degs, which seems to favour Armel. Alex's problem with the Nr 1 Furler may also contribute to his lack of competative speed upwind. He is still in contention, but needs the winds to go aft, which doesn't look like happening any time soon!

My understanding from the clip Alex posted was that he had swapped out the furler with a spare and was functioning as normal in that area.

I had expected him to hold his distance or even close the gap, I am nonplussed by the distance he has given up ove roast 24 hours
