Vendée Globe 2016-2017

The next few days attempting to wriggle their way through an unusual doldrums situation will be really interesting. Where winds are lighter and fickle Armel seems to be the master.

Alex's wind gear is now adhoc too (aft quarter) and in lighter winds he has to switch the pilot to compass mode, which not only impacts on potential progress but also hinders the old 'combat naps'.

Although I seem to recall Alex got the better or Armel on the way south through the Doldrums. Nice to see sub 300 miles difference. Really need about 16 knots from the port qtr. I read somewhere that Boss gets on her foil earlier than the others and at better angles

It's difficult to say definitively, but I suspect that Hugo Boss is faster than Banque Populaire, all other things being equal, (which, of course, they never are). HB is carrying quite a lot of damage, now, but it's still a neck-and-neck race. The doldrums can be a lottery, though.

I think you mean starboard quarter. HB is now without a starboard foil.

Love the latest question and answer session on the ATRacing Facebook page. He clearly has a huge following largely because he communicates so well.

I saw Alex say in one of the videos he posted a week or two ago that he is faster in the stronger winds on the foiling tack as he has better sails.

Any real hope of overtaking seems to me to be about making a better /lucky punt on him picking a better way through the lighter winds

Alex had a good day today.
Conrad Colman (9th) seems to have recovered from his repair activities and is making good progress too.
Rich Wilson (14th) is making good progress and chasing down the group ahead of him.
Sebastian Destremau (18th) is still at a buoy in Tasmania effecting repairs, hopefully he will get away tomorrow.

Update at 23:09 - it looks as though Sebastian got underway about an hour ago.

I think that's right.

Are we all plugged into this website also??

It has been mentioned a few times here, I know, and with good reason.

If we look at the weather 3 days and then 7 days ahead, we can see that after the current Doldrums, they will need to go up the back of the unusual 'Azores Low', then up the back of a High pressure off Spain.

If they get there with only a couple of hundred miles separation, this will be the crux.
It looks as though Armel will just scoot around the back (west) of it, but it will collapse as Alex arrives.

Lets hope the current forecast model is proved wrong....

On the latest update he has got the distance to Armel down to 134 miles but is now running into the buffer of the doldrums it is going to be a painful couple of days and if the models are correct Armel will start to extend his lead back. Alex has around 50 miles to run to the equator.
