Vendée Globe 2016-2017

Enda O’Coineen has completed repairs and is underway (15th place) - I bet he is knackered after all that and the trouble he had anchoring ( he should have posted for advice on here).

Historically they have carried FX 55 or a few G 55. It might be part of Class rules now to carry FX 55 (this what they did for the last Volvo, each yacht carried two FX 85, + chain and rode supplied by the race organisers and the storage location was assigned). I cannot imagine they have changed from an FX 55, but they could be carrying alloy Spades. These Southern Ocean coasts are notorious for weed (kelp) and it has been known that the anchorage in Stewart Island is full of weed, so the problems were not unforeseen. Auckland Island further south has a sandy bay for an anchorage, but maybe it faced the wrong way and perhaps Enda did not have charts, its not easy to get into.

They are horrific yachts to anchor as they have no bow roller (unsurprisingly) and the bowsprit has a kicker wire that will cut through the rode (has done on a previous race). They need set up a bridle, not sure what they attach it to. They then need to attach the rode to the bridle. But anchoring 60' yacht in any wind, with the mainsail part up, single handed - herculean task.

But anchoring is par for the course, once each in at least the previous 3 races. Also used in the 2 previous Volvos.

In the last but one VG, the kicker wire cut through the rode, 2nd anchor deployed and then cut free and abandoned on leaving. There are 2 x FX 85 on the bottom, I think its called Sandy Bay, at Auckland Island.

Le Cleac'h apparently had some problems yesterday, but he has told French TV that the problems are now behind him.

This is very interesting, and would help explain Alex closing the gap significantly.

This could be a three way fight yet, 3rd is only 900 odd NM behind Alex and we've seen just how insignificant that can be.......

I'm devastated! I thought he was just about to come back into it! Such a shame that the race has lost one of it's characters! Well done for getting as far as you have Enda. Your a real hero!

It is interesting to view the latest 1700GMT plot from https://gis.ee/vg/ which shows on the forward time projections changes to the tracks of the contenders including deffinate tacks. How are they making these assumptions? Are they just guessing?

This "enhancement" is causing problems. I can only progress about 3 x "+12hrs" before the screen freezes/fails to respond.

Anyone know what the problem is, how it can be rectified or how it might be turned-off?

Alex seems to be sailing closer to the wind, and taking time back on Le Cleac'h.

I still believe that Armel has a problem with his boat, which was documented on French TV a couple of days ago.

Alex looked tired yesterday, but he now has wind instruments and I believe he will now push the Boss hard

Big Joe, both lead boats are sailing about 56-7 degrees off the true wind. It's just that Thompson is further south so at present has a beneficial wind angle in that the wind he is getting is almost from due North.

It's a win for Alex just now with a better wind direction but I think Armel will tack first then it's advantage him. Alex is doing well to keep up on his bad side. When they both get into the same easterly trades we should see how they compare. All exciting stuff.

13:00 French time shows Armel continuing on starboard tack NW while AT is continuing on port tack NE, I think Armel has made a mistake unless he tacks soon AT will be well to windward, but we'll see.
