Vendée Globe 2016-2017

Unfortunately, Tanguy de Lamotte (Initiatives Couer) is retiring from the race, having climbed the mast to check out the damage there.

What a shame- he was raising money for a charity that provides cardiac surgery to children around the world.

Perhaps he can head back to Les Sables-d'Olonne, get the problem fixed and restart the race? Or has the start line closed?

There's a ten day limit on restarts, so with nine days already gone, that would be involve some very sailing and equally fast mast repair work :)

If you look on the map in the apps it has a dotted line which the are close to and I assume it is the great circle route down to the Southern Ocean.

No, it is the likely routing based on climatic data. If they were to head straight for the Cape, they would get becalmed in the St Helena anti-cyclone.

Do you think they will revise the ice limit? To get into the E and N winds they are going to have to be right on the edge of it.

Going straight to Cape Town would also mean less favourable winds (on the nose) which is generally slower. Only on the VOR might it make sense to go closer to Africa (depending on the winds) cause they have to go to Cape Town. For the Vendee then just want to get south as early as possible (so beyond Cape Town).

Alex Thomson Smashes Time To Equator Record

Great news for Alex Thomson. He has now smashed the Vendee Globe record for the fastest time from start to equator.

The British skipper crossed the line in 9 days, 7 hours and 3 minutes at 19.05 UTC on 15 November, 2016. ...... This beat the previous record set in 2004 by French skipper Jean Le Cam, who did it in 10 days and 11 hours. Le Cam currently lies in 9th position in the 2016 edition of the race. ....

According to the charity's website, you can like them on Facebook and their sponsors will donate €2 on your behalf. Not that I'm on Facebook.
