Vendée Globe 2016-2017

I hope this hasn't been posted already. (It's not easy keeping track of the posts whist mobile)...

The animated Windytv viewer with Vendee globe tracking on one URL..

Windytv with Vendee Globe overlay

I know it's a short URL but believe me!

It's a great link, but you should probably give the chap who produced it some credit! (A poster known as forss over on Sailing Anarchy.) Unless of course you and he are the same person?

Flaming..
Thank you for crediting the creator on our behalf.

(I did try to find their details whilst on the web page but it wasn't clear).

Surely that should be eastwards around the bottom of the St Helena high towards the Cape of Good Hope!

Hence my joke about following the wrong dotted line earlier! If you didn't know you would assume they were going the other way?!

Only 10 days to South America! Where can I buy an IMOCA Open 60! :D

If it's speed you are after you should look at Thomas Colville in Sodebo (102' x 72') who is attacking the Jules Verne record. He has just beaten Francis Joyon's record to the equator by 250 miles in a little over 5 days. Cf Alex Thompson in 9 days plus.

PS : Alex Thompson Hugo Boss : (From Les Sables d'Olonne) 9d 7h 3m - 1d 4h faster than the existing record

Thomas Coville (from Ushant) 5d 17h 15m beating Francis Joyon's time of 6d 16h 24m.

Alex is now about 125nm ahead of the next boat according to the latest report. There is a good interview with him in this video, starting at 2:45.

I'd put money on Tommo beating the 24hr record in the next 72 hrs

To put that in context the singlehanded monohull record currently stands at 534 miles. An average of 22.7 knots.

I think he could well beat that, but I'd also put money on it not being by a huge amount, as the angle is a bit hot and the waves will be a bit short period. I'd bet on someone bettering it by a lot once they're in the Southern ocean and have much longer swell period. Comanche's overall monohull record of 618 miles (just over 25 knots) looks eminently achievable by these boats now.

meanwhile Alex and the leading pack are charging along at up to 22knts ... but the others are caught in the Doldrums. Really? That’s what it says - but in fact they’re all doing 10-15 knots which isn’t my idea of being “caught in the Doldrums” - i call that ripping along very nicely indeed!

Much more realistic is the irishman pootling along at 5-6 knots, probably drinking Guinness and still yerknow actually moving, quite good stuff? Pressure off now he’s Officially Not Last and of course, still the leading Irish boat. Hurrah!
