Vendée Globe 2016-2017

Being ignorant of such hi-tech equipment, is it actually slowing him - and ought to be ditched?

Or does it mean the others will now inevitably overhaul him and scoot away ahead over the next 19,000 miles

Vincent Riou who is 4th, does not have foils, and he's only 150 miles off the lead.

However, I believe Alex will loose some performance on port tack.

Thank you, that's helpful - and somewhat encouraging.
I'm glad you mentioned performance on port tack - I thought I'd be too much of a numpty to ask if one tack would be compromised and the other not :encouragement:

The hull of Hugo Boss was designed to also be fast without foils, as it was always anticipated that they could get broken off. I would thus expect that the onboard computer is also thus equipped with polars for foil-less hull.

The lack of symmetry might be a problem though. I don't know what routing software he is using but I don't suppose most commercial routing softwares cater for asymmetric polars.

And I think HB was more optimised for reaching than the other foilers. The designer a few days ago was talking about partially retracting them when running. It will be interesting when they get in the big stuff down south as to how much delta there is when HB is on Port or STBD. And between him and the other foilers when running.

Looking at the last 24hrs it would appear that HB can still make good speed and so I don't think "all is Lost" just yet.

I had a look at the Adrena website, which is the routing software used by the entire VG fleet. Apparently it does use asymmetric polars, so I expect Thomson has just loaded up a pre-prepared polar for a missing foil. Even if he does not have a prepared polar, Adrena has a learning mode to make a new polar, so he can just sail for a few minutes and record the data.

Alex hanging onto his 85nm lead.

Wondering why we never see the footage from the onboard fixed cameras? Hugo Boss (I think) has a camera mounted on the pushpit and another on the mast but we never see the footage.

Would be interesting to see the damage to Hugo Boss. Perhaps even the moment of impact if the cameras are recording 24/7.

I was wondering what it was that hit him. Lucky it was only :( the foil and not the hull at that speed.

Its going to be interesting to see who of the leading group can hang onto the breeze for the longest. The way things are going, Alex might not only maintain his lead, but extend it.

There was some snide comment from Le Cam earlier today saying something like the other boats are holding back now like AT should have done and that he will not finish in the top 6.

Frankly it's simple. The french all think AT pushes too hard because they don't push hard enough. Hence AT with a bust boat can keep his lead. And if I look ahead a couple of days I wouldn't be surprised if he extends due to his latitude and the evolution of the low they are riding.

I don't get why Le Cam thinks that Alex should be any slower than Riou or Meilhat. Alex has already shown that he is the fastest boat in the fleet, and that still counts for any part of the race on the starboard gybe. Maybe Le Cam is upset that he is already 1000nm off the pace ;)

I'm sure I heard him saying he now has a stump sticking out that is slowing him down and he was going to have to go over the side to cut it off. Presumably he will do that when he gets onto a starboard tack. I'd love to see footage of that. Maybe all that keel walking business was not all a waste of time. :). Still a remarkable performance and great determination with a broken boat. Can't wait to see him leaving the rest standing when he gets onto a starboard tack.

Alan Roura, the youngest of this year's skippers at 23, has broken off from the main pack to head to the coast of Brazil in search of a mobile signal! Apparently he needs to download new software as he cannot access weather information. Nce to know the Vendee guys face the same problems that normal cruisers do...

I wondered what he was doing over there. I also wonder how that will be regarded by the rules committee. Clearly if a friend came alongside in a RIB, and chucked a CD with the software to him, that would be against the rules. Downloading via a mobile signal is not a lot different is it?

Last time out he had a problem with his hydro generators which led to little communication with HB, perhaps as a team they prefer not to show the world what they do and how they do it.

Personally, I am not a fan of all the media stuff the skippers need to do as it feels all a bit contrived.

Wonder what happened to his satellite link?

Looks like only 2 foilers and 1 semi foiler are able to hang on to the low now, but a new record for Cape of Good Hope (18.5E) seems certain. The old record was just shy of 23 days, and so far the leaders have only had 16!
