Vendée Globe 2016-2017

Alex looks as if he could be through the doldrums in the next 50 miles or so, however, the wind will be on the nose.

Also noticed that the boats around the Cape Verde islands are experiencing considerably less wind than what the leaders experienced.

Tommo keeping his easting as he heads through the doldrums. If it works he will have better wind when he pops out the bottom.

Could be a significant 24-48 hours this.

That's what I was thinking, he has made one bad mistake, that gybe at Cape Finisterre, that cost him, however he brilliantly anticipated the accelerated wind zones through the Verde's.

Lets hope this is another positive decision by Alex.

I think so too. Look at the speed difference between Alex and the rest of the pack. At this rate he might be 100+ miles ahead by this evening.

Alex has made a couple of dodgy tactical decisions (easy to see with hindsight!) but these will inevitably even out over the race.

In the absence of gear failure that leaves boatspeed and without wishing to temp fate here ...well I'd imagine the other favourites are starting to ask the question.

It's going to be interesting to see if Alex can hang on to the breeze as it dies away in front of him. If he can, then he is really going to extend his lead as the others look like they will get stuck for a while.

Just heard via Facebook that Tanguy de lamotte (Initiatives coeur) has had some sort of rig/sail problem.

Update on his progress, the bit in bold is very interesting...

Tanguy de Lamotte reached Mindelo in the Cape Verde islands around 1500hrs UTC, where he is expected to start repairs to his masthead. The race rules are very specific. He is allowed to pick up an existing mooring and leave it, unassisted, or he can set his own anchor. If he breaks his engine seal and uses his engine he must tell the International Jury who will apply a penalty, if considered applicable.

I bet it's fun picking up a mooring singlehanded under sail in an Open 60! Probably one of the few times it would be worth lassoing the buoy...

Just talking to my daughter about it. Looked up Ellen Macarthur. She came second in 2001 at the age of 24. Remarkable.
