Great footage of Armel and Alex from the Marine Nationale on the AT Facebook page. They didn't pick AT up on their AIS so maybe at fault unless he is in stealth mode!
Meanwhile, with Rich Wilson cautiously rounding the Horn today 14 of the 18 remaining competitors are now in the Atlantic and that's almost the top and bottom of it really.
I also see that RichW is threading his way through the channel 'tween Tierra del Feugo and Isle de los Estados. This is something he said in his video that he had never done and would only do if the tides were favourable, he seems to have timed it perfectly. But cautious as ever he is only making 8 knots with a favourable current and 18knkts of wind up his chuff.
Here is a link to the you tube video where he talks about his considerations and approach to rounding the Horn - linky
Great 5 minute explanation on video about rounding Cape Horn, using weather chart GRIBs and depth charts, from Rich Wilson: Go to the video near the bottom of the page here: http://www.vendeeglobe.org/en/news/1...e-globe-finish
True, but the gap was huge at one stage, now it's down to 42nm.
Who knows what that might be in another 12/24/36 hours?
5am on wednesday 18th AT is 39 nm behind...
As the race leadership is measured on distance to finish Line, is Alex going to suddenly appear to be in the lead as he is closer, as they both sail merrily on past the finish towards Cornwall?
I don't think that's a good strategy if your competitor has tacked before you. Yes a longer race for you but not for him. Looks like a tack around 12hours from now when they start getting headed.I wondered if AT's strategy might be to keep going further into the light variables where a longer, slower race would give him more chances to break thru and past. But the wind is lookink fresher and thus more consistent now.
Latest 0800 update has both of them still on starboard tack, Alex 40 miles behind. I guess that Armel can afford to over-stand before tacking, since if they are sailing further off the wind on port tack, and perhaps foiling, Alex will not be:-(. Perhaps Alex should tack now, rather than being disadvantaged, will not win by following unless he has a speed advantage.
All the best Alex, you can do it:-0
And that's from a Scotsman

Why is this a disgrace? If you are are sat in your cosy house in the middle of winter and only drive out to the countryside once a year and sit in your car by the road perhaps venturing a massive 50 meters from the roadside do you think that the viewer would understand? What a disgrace. Alex actually got a mention on BBC breakfast a few minutes ago. They said he was second and wished him well but seemed more amused that he hadn't had a shower for a couple of months. The lack of coverage is appalling. They have talked for longer about whether they need to add the title Sir when they mention Andy Murray.
Interesting piece on BBC Radio 4 Today programme.
Very Interesting indeed. Dame Ellen said Alex had a spare foil and fitted it![]()
