Vendée Globe 2016-2017

The event organisers and spectators must be thrilled to have such a close finish and in daylight, presumably.

She did indeed. Go to - http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08bhpbs and skip to 1:46:45

Maybe she's not following the race hence her mistake in saying that.

Sincere apologies Andrew she did indeed say that. In fact she said he had already replaced it! She is mistaken.

Alex clawed a few miles in ,now 36.3 miles behind but both now sailing at similar speeds Remora model predicts Alex will gain maybe 5 more miles before the turn but once on Port tack Armel will have the advantage and stretch his lead to 4 hours at the finish, barring the unexpected of course.

Update from the VG website:
The tracker will update hourly once the leader gets to within 100nm of the finish. More information on how to follow the finish of the Vendée Globe can be found here http://www.Vendeeglobe.org/en/village-for-the-finish/how-to-follow-the-finish

The Remora model suggests Armel will arrive at approx 1400 GMT in daylight, Alex at approx 1700 GMT which will be in the dark.

Let's hope the model is wrong.

Would these foils not have been designed to be interchangeable?
Are dagger boards interchangeable for that matter?
I imagine they are big bits of kit to carry a spare....

They're very heavy. Currently he's speeding along at 13 knots on the port foil, which is in the water. How on earth is he going to take it off and fit it the other side? Even if it were possible to do it with the boat stopped, that would lose him the race anyway.

Tides becoming important now ...

Yes, and local knowledge, of which ALC will have plenty. He's a top Figaro sailor, of course, and the waters off West and South Brittany are his training grounds.

They'll both have to avoid the Off Ouessant TSS complex, and I'm wondering if one of them will make a dive through the Passage de Fromveur or down the Chenal de La Helle..... Such would make a spectacular 'last-lap' ending to a spectacular race - and give their sponsors much-enhanced TV coverage.

I seem to remember (might have read it on this thread actually so take this information with a bit of caution) that each foil was around 250kg. Anyway I imagine that they have a certain aerodynamic shape, and I don't think that they would be interchangeable (i.e. the port one being put on the starboard side).

More to the point, the lower part of the board curves in towards the centre of the boat , removal is from underneath...

So that's this bit sorted then - impossible to change the foil. I hope we'll see pictures when he arrives.

Was listening to the "vacations" of this morning. Alex seems completely exhausted. Issues with his automated pilots in wind mode. Hasn't slept apparently much (if at all) over the past three days and he said he was out of options.
Just hope he will be careful. Very impressed by his performance.
