Just wondered........they seem cheap and powerful, can they be adapted/ used as a windlass?
Vehicle recover winches. Any use on a boat.

Used one together with some scaffolding (the rig was down so we couldn't use the boom) to lift the engine out of Kindred Spirit, and back in again after overhaul. Obviously we could have just used a large tackle, but the winch was easily controllable and self-belaying which was useful during some of the fiddly bits.

Why would a vehicle need to recover a winch? Or is it a winch to recover vehicles? And how would this affect a boat? Or is the title just illiterate gobbledegook?

Used the motor and gearbox off one to drive a hydraulic pump.
I also have one to see if I can convert one of my sheet winch to be powered. The power of an ATV winch is the same as used on medium sized sheet winch.
Fitting a chain wheel of a chain block could make a cheap windlass for anchor chain
