I have a similar problem however my boat is 1977 so how do I prove tax was paid as VAT arrived later and the original receipt no longer exists. Contact with last owner also a no-no as he moved to France after sale.

You could try to contact the original distributor of the boat - they might have the initial VAT paperwork.

Otherwise would some form of notarised paperwork from the Customs and Excise people help? They have always been pretty helpful when I've had need (infrequently) to contact them.

I think all you need to do is prove it was built before 1985.

Have you got any old mooring bills or anything with the boat name on it dated before 1985?

After 1985, you need more documentation.
