You phone up your local customs and excise and make an appointment. Take all your paperwork with you and prove status and they will issue you with documentation to prove your status................................easy!

Maybe you could update us later..

My experience is that HMCE will not, nowadays, give any sort of VAT status certificate. Believe me, I've tried locally and through the National Helpline.

Three years ago the local offices were helpful, but I am told they now have very definite instructions not to give an opinion.

Most frustrating, but I wish you luck.

Re: Maybe you could update us later..

my local C and E office were kind enough to issue a certificate saying that all EU taxes had been paid in the spring of 2002, so it my be worth trying.

If you have the original bill of sale it should show that the Vat is included in the total sale price, and that is enough to prove Vat has been paid.

My experiance on trying to sort out the VAT on a home made boat is probably relevent to your problem.

It stems from the disbandment of the specialist section at Dover.

Three years ago at the LBS I was told how to obtain a VAT paid cert by HMC by writing (with the relevent info) to the nearest office (Glasgow in my case). I phoned Glasgow and they knew nothing about it. So I delayed applying.

Two years ago again at the LBS I asked again . But the rules have changed 'Sir'. I would not be issued with a VAT paid certificate. I would just have to carry about 80% of the original VAT receipts for all the major parts of the craft with me at all times when at sea and produce them when challenged.

My pile of receipts is about an inch high and on many of them the ink has faded. Imagine showing this lot to a continental law enforcement officer and trying to explain to him.

Last year I did not go to the LBS. I wonder what the current rules are.

Perhaps I shall ask again in January.
