Hi,

As most of us are aware if you live on your boat and your mooring can be proved to be exclusive, you have to pay council tax. Now what some may not know is that if you boat is a qualifying vessel it can be zero rated for VAT. The good news is that if your mooring is exclusive and it is a qualifying vessel, that also applies to your mooring and you shouldn't have to pay VAT on your mooring fees.

I only found this out, as the mooring I'm on never used to be exclusive and we did get moved around. That has stopped in the last couple of years, and the council have started asking the marina questions about the boats and owners, so I did some research, and while doing it, came across this document. http://cursorium.co.uk/uploads/vatflowchartformooringfacilities.pdf
So if the council now manage to prove that our moorings are exclusive, as I own a qualifying vessel, I'll be looking into claiming back some VAT.
