VAT on 2nd boat

Hey,

I'm thinking about buying a 1976 boat from the States and bringing it back to the UK. Do I have to pay VAT on the purchase price when bringing it over here.
Also, do you know of any shipping agents who could ship it from New York?

Thanks,

PW

PW - Unless you have owned the boat in the US whilst being a US resident for more than six months then I believe duty will need to be paid when it is imported. Sorry, I can't help you with shipping agents.

And BTW if the asset is a 1976 Bayliner Montego then be prepared for a lot of stupid answers as this was used in a wind-up recently on the Motor Boat forum.

I think that you will almost certainly be required to pay VAT on the VALUE of the boat at import.

More importantly and problematically, presuming that this will be the first time that the boat will be placed into service in the EU, I think it will have to conform to the new Recreational Craft Directive and be CE marked as such, which could be very awkward and quite expensive. Check very carefully. CEproof on 02380 45 32 45 can advise.

Shippers.

Peters & May are specialist yacht shippers, they used to have a regular run from the New York area to Britain. See www.petersandmay.com. I've found them helpful. But there must be others.

As others have pointed out, you will have to pay VAT and satisfy the RCD if you are an EU resident or want to import the boat permanently. VAT will be based on the customs valuation, not (necessarily) the purchase price. RCD is a can of worms.
