I did also buy some foam rollers but I haven't tried them out yet. Probably a mistaken purchase because I don't have any areas of varnish large enough to justify their use.

We normally let the slowly stirred varnish settle to allow any bubbles to rise to the surface and disperse. Are you sure that a foam roller will not create thousands of bubbles on the varnished surface, bubbles that will still be there when the varnish sets?

That's a good point but, as I said, I haven't tried them yet.

Keep an eye on the 'For Sale' forum next spring- there might be a box of them going cheap!
