Thinking of buying a boat in America and bringing her back at some point.
What if she is already ssr part one registered, Built 1985 in england having been previously exported. No paper work or proof of vat paid status?
Although thought to have been vat paid at original build.
Is there any way of finding out if the v.a.t has been paid?

Assuming you are an EU citizen you will have to pay VAT on the boat when you import it into the EU whether or not VAT was paid when she was originally built. This is because you bought the boat outside the EU and are now looking to import it. Yes, that might mean that VAT will be paid on the same boat twice /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif

For more info take a look <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.hmce.gov.uk/forms/notices/8.htm>here</A>.

Thanks Tony,
Thats what i thought.
And would this be based on the condition of the boat when imported, Or the current price of one fully fitted?
I.e if you import a bit of an old dog would the v.a.t. worth of the vessel reflect this.

Hi Brian,
So the robbing gits get the v.a.t. twice. Nice work if you can get it. Why cant they have a central register to check if it has already been paid. They seem very good at remembering there own salary increases. Lol.
Cheers

It\'s estimated

on the current value of the boat. The trouble is that they frequently won't accept the price you paid as the current value, but rather use the UK valuation.
As UK prices are inflated this might be a problem.
as already suggested, if you get a shipping agent to bring it in for you you'll have a higher chance of getting the price paid in the US, accepted as current value.

Re: Quick Question

Sorry if this has been asked before, but what if a vessel was built before 1974 and therefore VAT, and is purchased from another EC country & brought back to the Uk?

{Therfore No VAT could have been charged on its purchase/sale originally}

If you now buy it from an un-VAT registered private seller via broker - what is the situation?
