Using my Draper Expert ratchet crimper

Which side should the wire side of crimp terminals be located when using this tool? The jaw with the coloured dots on is not symmetrical so I'm presuming there's a right side and a wrong side to have the wire approaching the tool.

To (hopefully) avoid confusion, I'm aware that the opposing jaws are different. That's not a problem. There's a small difference between sides of the jaw with the dots and that's troubling me. This doesn't seem to have a manual in the Draper Tools database.

Wrong answer. If it didn't matter the jaws would be symmetrical. They aren't, so there's obviously a right and a wrong way.

As said. It doesn't matter. The crimper works whichever the way the wire is inserted. The differing shapes just ensure the correct crimp form is achieved and either way is OK.

I don't agree. I repeat, why aren't the jaws symmetrical?

I have one of these and find it doesn't make the crimps tight enough either way!

The wire pokes into the crimp from the coloured dot side. Hold the connector on the other side and gently close the tool until the crimp is gripped but not crushed, poke wire in then operate the tool until it clicks for release.

Looking at the shape of the jaws on my crimpers, that makes sense.

If you crimp the wrong way round, the result is the crimped tube part is bent.

Crimps are cheap, stick one in each way and see what works.

This guy agrees with me ..

Agree with Wonky winch, look at the dies. The side with the dot is minutely larger than the other side. This is because it will be crimping the wire insulation as well as the wire. The other side is only crimping the wire core. I use mine so infrequently that I have to check each time.

Same for me. Never had a problem whichever way around but will take more notice next time.
