Re: hiya - BB full update

hello there.

Yank imported vhf's are not technically legal, no comeback if they go wrong, but do work. There are postings about this if you use the "seacrth" facilty to look at old postings.

.....but to save you the trouble with regard to other matters....

1 Gps's are legal and work anywhere.
2 New boats are dead expensive.
3 Petrol boats are cheap but a hassle.
4 Diesel boats are also a hassle, but the fuel is more widely available.
5 The boat you are thinking about buying will probably be alright really, but is a bit overpriced
6 UK weather is sometimes ok but almost everywhere else is better.
7 Hammers are very handy.
8 Some people with boats are gits. But mostly, they aren't.
9 Boating is expensive. But cheaper than some other things.
10 the reason that some people with big boats are skinflinty is that that they like being able to afford things, hence do everything possible (i.e being v skinflinty) to preserve that position, and hence become even richer and more skinflinty.
11. It''s usually better to get someone else to fix the boat, but proably more expensive.
12 The information you require can be found using "Google" and typing in the keywords.
13 The primary technical reason for a boat component not working is a lack of "newness". Sell the component, or throw it away , and buy a new one. If this doesn't work, replace the boat.
14 BarryD' is buying a new boat/car/phone/computer/thing within the two or three weeks.
15 Soltron is scientifically proven to be a diesel additive. Everyone swears by it.

there, now you're totally up to date! Pip pip!

In case you are confused by the 'comprehensive' replies here, in brief American VHFs bought in America are illegal for use in Europe unless they comply with the relevant standards.

As suggested elsewhere in this thread, click on Search and enter 'VHF in the search window (would suggest you search all threads and all forums for best result).

Same recommendation applies to other common questions you might have, although unlike the suggestion here there are plenty more that can be asked so feel free to do so.

Search for info

just searching for VHF will find too much stuff, Newport person. But... if you do a search and put "VHF" and "USA" as the things to look for in the same search and set the condition to be AND then it will find the relevant posts about yank radios.

wrist slap noted, KimH, ouch.

Hi Steve,

I would definitely recommend paying attention to Mr Hollamby's observations regarding the legality of installing US transmitting kit on board UK (or any non US administration) vessels. Equipment from a US manufacturer purchased in the US (on the Internet) is rarely built for use outside of the US domestic market and is manufactured to technical specifications below those required in Europe.

Thanks for info on seach found some info,
just a question on legality of usa/international radio, as I have a hand held which I can set to either channel, and the navco I had on old boat was the same.
I under stand it might not be the best qualityand service situation, but for
£69+p&p it can't be that bad.

Try West Marine (tho' getting them to supply you if your outside the states could be interesting www.westmarine.com

They do the ICOM and Raymarine range how these ranges differ from the European I'm not sure. ICOM uk are at www.icomuk.com and Raymarine (US based) are at www.raymarine.com

The minimum requirement (for DSC is class D) in Europe. The states has not fully taken on the IMO classifications for DSC standards and their leisure / small craft minimum requirement is an amalgam of class D and E (E being a lower standard no longer acceptable in Europe (this is for retail.. you may still use a Class E VHF.

Some points from experience:

1.West marine WILL supply you in the UK. - Quicker than most UK chandlers unbelievably (in 3 days on one occasion!)

2. The kit is in fact better quality for half the price, which is why U.S manufacturers guarantee their radios for 5 years (compare that to UK guarantees). Also, the yanks don't settle for the rubbish we do here in the UK. - I even have found buying my clothes there gets me better quality (and it goes without saying... cheaper).

3. A US DSC VHF is illegal to use here, but WILL work and save your life (however, the UK would like you to pay either another £200 for that privelege or else die 'cos you can't afford it - thats our policy here). You WILL get repair backup, and someone I spoke to a year ago who bought one worked out that he could afford to send it back over 5 times and STILL be in pocket than if he had paid a British price (though as they've become a little cheaper here that margin may be less now). However, if the RA catches you they'll cut your b***s off for having the temerity to dare try and save your families life without paying the UK supercharge.

4. As there seems (from this recurring question) to be more US ones coming in, it seems that the RA will be out looking for them soon I think.

All I can say is that I wish I had known about these US ones before I bought my legal UK one at the inflated UK price!
