Hi All.

The Lake District National Park Authority, LDNPA, is considering amending the Lake Windermere Bye-laws to allow it to grant exemptions to the 10mph speed limit for certain specific events.

These could include Motorboat Rallies, Powerboat Racing, and Speed Records Week.

They are conducting an on-line petition to gauge response, and if the Fors outnumber the Againsts, the new ruling could be in place this year.

This is a huge opportunity to begin to restore one of the country's best boating venues for motorboat and sportsboat use.

The petition ends at midnight today, Monday 19th March, and it is vital that we mobilise as many votes as possible, as the Anti-camp are marshalling their supporters.

Go to www.surveymonkey.com/s/wmere2012

You will find a series of other proposed measures there, which are generally acceptable, including altering the existing speed limit from 10mph to 10 knots, which you should also support.

Any questions, contact myself on 07703 218906.

Done.
I've voted against the option of increasing the speed limit and one or two of the other roposals. We already have a lot of places and opportunities to open the throttle and don’t need the extra noise and environmental pollution doing this in a sensitive are such as Windermere.
I don’t think you’ve helped yourself coming on here with a first post, telling people what they should support, it just smacks of arrogance. Thank you for publicising the survey.

Thats quite an arrogant statement in its self.

I've no problem with the first post as he openly states his viewpoint and assumes you will be intelligent enough to disagree if you wish. Had a quick look though and I thought a 10 knot speed limit was bizarre - I cant think of a worse speed for a RIB or speedboat - must be near maximum wash and fuel consumption.

I wasn't going to bother because it doesn't affect me but your post has spurred me on to vote against you and for the proposed lifting of the ban?

One of the justifications for restricting the speed limit on Windermere was excessive wash disrupting nesting birds. There are some 6 ferries that create enormous wash , 10 mph (that is how well the research was on boating , they didn't even know we use knots) was plucked from the air, the spiritual home of Britain's water speed records (Coniston) now can't even recreate Bluebird's run without special dispensation. And for what? So the Mancunian Navy could be banned . They got rid of the jet skiers but at least the thousands of Canada geese can now nest. Oh sorry , they are shooting them .

Erm ....why would you choose to go at the speed which causes maximum wash, just go a bit slower and cause no wash ?

As for the Knots vs MPH showing a lack of knowledge and difficult for locals to comprehend ,the The Thames speed limit is not in knots but in KPH,how on earth do the 8000 odd Thames boaters manage to work it out,or are they just a bit brighter than those existing in the wastelands beyond the hallowed M25 ? :)

The survey is still live, I just filled it in. There is a lot more to that survey than you have said in your post, it isn't at all just about speed limits, I think you give the wrong impression.

He didn't say it was "just about speed", he said "You will find a series of other proposed measures there"

Kinell, it's only a survey. Surely we can all read it and fill it in as we see fit ?

Who said that you couldn't? Mr Kinell.:D

Just tried to do it myself at 9:47 - petition closed :( would have supported it had I read it in time).

It may have been his first post but for those not in the know, the author of the post is the founding editor of MBM. So he does come with some credentials :)

Aye but maybe not the relevant ones?

And what would they be?

Well not being an editor of Motor Boats Monthly, that is not credentials, it is vested interest.

There are so many other places for high speed motor boats to go and play in without restrictions of any kind that it makes me feel that to demand the use of somewhere like Windermere, that at least is a haven of peace and tranquility, is selfish beyond belief.

Still that's just my opinion, I doubt very much that it will attract much sympathy from most on here.:)
