upgrading winches lewmar 8 to 16

does anybody know if drilling new holes is needed by upgrading winches from lewmar 8 to lewmar 16?

many thanks
Probably.
Clean the old holes (drill 1mm larger than the old ones) and fill with thickened epoxy.
Drill new holes, make sure you orient the winch according to instructions before drilling.

Definitely, though curiously the 8s require 5 x M6 on an 80mm circle and 16s 4 on a 66mm circle.

The suggestion by kuterikt is, unfortunately, unlikely to work and, in view of the potential additional loads I'd be inclined to epoxy a new, rounded-edge 10mm ply backing plate into position, fill the old holes with glassfibre/polyester paste and then re-drill the mounting holes.

This is assuming that it's the old Ocean or non-ST winches that you're fitting and not the latest Evo range which is lighter and can be dissembled without tools.

I'm wondering why you claim that glassfibre/polyester paste is better suited than thickened epoxy?
Adding a backing plate can be a good idea if the deck need it, rememeber that these holes are mostly in shere load.

We replaced our winches with new ones 5 years ago still no problem with the epoxy fillings (used epoxy with a mix of high density and microfibres). Epoxy adhers better to old GRP than polyester..
