Updating electronic charts

Well I admire those who regularly update paper charts - I'm afraid I've got a bit of a backlog. Looks like I'll be getting a mooring in the Solent next spring - some of the charts in my Imray 2200 set date back to 2004/5.

Hmm so I am a bad buoy when my local chart is 10+ years old (uncorrected), and as I get further away my charts get newer but still not corrected?

Then again we sailed off the edge of our charts the other year!

Chart corrections to me are a bit like osmosis, as long as you are not stupid you might get embarrassed but should not come to harm...

I bit like me. I tried to update but got fed up with it. Some charts are 15 years old and the majority of buoys are roughly in the same position unless removed .... This is where a new almanac each year helps out.

Imray don't publish corrections indefinitely - after a while you need to buy new. These days there are wind farms springing up all over the place.

Same with Admiralty, you should not keep updating old charts. When New Editions are publish they may contain updates that have not been put into the Weekly Notices.

They are often quite easy to spot.

I sometimes check on this site to see if the charts onboard look fairly similar before a passage...

Sorry, but I can't see why people get their knickers in a twist over a buoy moving a 100mtrs or so or a buoy missing or a new one appearing.
I work on the principle of 'sail by what you see' so if the chart / plotter says the buoy is in position x but I now see it in position y, that is what I go by.
A chart update could be 3 or 6 months old, or something might change just after an update is issued, so IMO putting faith in updates isn't a great deal better than using an out of date chart.
And whilst on the subject, Pilot books are even worse! Buy one new and the info can be 5 or more years old.
Almanacs can also make mistakes, classic example was entry to the then new marina at Roscoff, I think it was Reeds that routed you through the wrong entrance.

Surely the answer here is to just apply the paper-chart updates? Only cost is a couple of hours of your time; personally I rather enjoy it.

I update my paper charts, but the Admiralty folio for the Irish Sea has corrections that run to over 60 pages. More than a couple of hours work

They are often quite easy to spot.

Not in the dark and fog which is when you need the information. Radar will show them but, if you can afford radar, you can afford new charts.
