just to update you on the Targa 31 in St Tropez.Being in the motor trade im very aware of mileage on cars and the depreciation and lesser desirability of higher mileage vehicles.i know its different with boats but my dilema is this, originally i was told it had 600 hours on it now i know thats only about 75 hours per annum but compared to anything else ive looked at and ive scoured the web for other boats of similar age also it appears high allthe others are between 400 and 550 hours. not alot of difference i hear you say but now the batteries have have been put back on (lcd display) i find its 750 hours.now the older something becomes the more use it gets ,things start to wear out and that costs money.by the time i finished with her in say 2 years it could be around 900hours thats going to put off a prospective buyer if everything else on the market is 300 hours less. I know alot of it is down to what you pay in the first place.am i losing the plot or should i be wary.Any saving could soon go on additional running costs.

I guess as your looking at it from the motor trade point of view look at it this way - if it's average speed throughout it's life was 20 knots (which is very very unlikely) then it's only done 17550 miles.

Re: Not big enough then

imho, if you think (now) that you'll get rid after only another 150 hours...why buy it? You could charter in the med for less than the trucking, mooring, fixing costs. Ok, so not quite a homey as owning yerown boat.

In these circumstance I wd consider a bigger boat - which you seem to be doing already! Not much news there of course cos i wd always buy a bigger boat . BUT big pity if you can "see" the getting rid of it stage already, tho poss cos you are hardbitten car type who jsu tknows thesethings .

As we've already established , it's not a matter of (say) 1000 hours on a diesel actully being awful (like say 100,000 miles actually is a blimmin load of miles on a car) it's just a "number" like a car being above or below 10,000 miles.

BTW, we did 150 hours a year on average. Buy the wrong boat, of course and you'll never go on it and erm therefore not do the hours...so what's the flippin point?....

Re: Not big enough then

Don't we all dream of a bigger boat? I haven't even taken delivery of my new one yet and already planning to go BIGGER in a couple of years time.

Sorry Matts should have said always dream of a bigger boat unless you've already got one over 60', anyway when does a boat become a ship?

Re: Not big enough then

cant afford a bigger one only just manage this price £60k. cant see myself going bigger just newer or like some dont get the time to use it or novelty wears off, this is first boat remember . i could buy smaller and cheaper but then then the i want bigger scenario might kick in so im looking at the biggest i can afford hence the t31 at 60k.

Re: get on with it....

Cant help thinking you're worrying about next to nowt Ian. Lets face it, it's not exactly a lot of hours however you look at it and as long as its been well cared for and serviced etc wot really matters is that you like it and the price is fair. Could use the hours as a bargaining point I spose but dont think it would put me off if I really liked the boat. Also, longer you keep it more average hours per annum levels out so if you really like it stop worrying and get boating!

Well, being in the motor trade, I guess you'll know how to clock it, then?
Seriously, though, the average motor boat usage is supposed to be about 100hrs pa so 75hrs pa is'nt a lot. With only 400hrs on an 8yr old boat I'd be more concerned about neglect
All other things being equal, the boat with higher hours should fetch slightly less money but condition and regular maintenance are far more important. I would much rather buy a well looked after boat with high hours than a neglected one with low hours

Come on Ian get a grip, you motor dealer chappies are all the same, buy and value cars by the 'book'. Well in this case there ain't no book as we all know, so just imagine it as a car that isn't in the book and use the same principles. BUT value it on the basis that you are selling and not buying and then pay the price less as much as you can get them down to. Whatever happens, for better or for worse, you will find a way out of it. BTW are you putting it on the books as stock or not?
