Considering 20% of England drains to the Humber its amazing the estuary has not silted up completely.

As long as your download the most up to date charts from ABP and you follow the channel the upper humber is a straightforward river to sail. Once past the bridge you are 100% reliant on their charts.

I've sailed many times over the years past the bridge and as far up as Goole.

The river is beautiful, peaceful and the pilotage makes its interesting from a sailing perspective.

It's imperative you listen carefully on the correct VHF channel for the part of the river you are on. VTS Humber are very efficient and warning you if there is going to be any ships and will instruct you to move to a particular side of the channel.

It's also worth contacting Goole docks once you get the Blacktoft Jetty they will advise you if they have any shipping leaving, the section up to Goole is narrow but with some forethought its not difficult to pass large ships.
