UK Coastguard Pay

Re: Don\'t let the facts get in the way...

Sorry, I'd somehow gained the impression that Channelyacht worked within the MCA, but I now find that he doesn't. My comment however was valid: the coastguards (or perhaps their union) would most probably benefit from more general public support if they took a more measured line in their claims for higher pay.

Re: Don\'t let the facts get in the way...

Happy to confirm I have no connection with the MCA other than a long working relationship with a number of its arms - my business is maritime emergency planning as a result of which I work with a number of European coastguard organisations and shipping lines. Also, as lifeboat crew both in UK and France, I see the differences and changes in incident coordination skills which are now starting to emerge.
I'm still really intrigued though why you refer the "the union" being more measured in pay claims - as I understand it, the report which stated they should receive a 25% upgrade came from someone like PWC - hardly known as a hotbed of socialism - which concluded not that the pay for the grade was wrong, but that the actual grade CG officers were graded as was wrong in the civil service structure. And the dispute is more about pay.
But then you have to also remember that since the new (no marine background) chief exec arrived, there have been (for the first time ever) no confidence votes, a strike by volunteer rescue teams, and this dispute.
Not a good record for only a few months in post!
