The news report on home page about the loss of boat due to engine failure (I wonder if they were Volvos?) makes alarming reading.

The quote from local coastguard raises question in my mind about DSC & GMDSS, again.

"The quick response to this incident may be attributed to other vessels maintaining a vigilant watch on VHF Ch16," said Stuart Elliman, Brixham Coastguard

What's going to happen when there is less of a watch, if any, on Ch.16? Will CG stil do Mayday relays? Who will hear 'em?

Re: weather?

Hmm. Not enough details for much comment. It was a motorboat, but pleasure or what? Not clear when exactly the problem started - was it yesterday (wednesday) when even the little TV forecasts said "Windy" all around UK?

Re: weather?

It was outside Plymouth breakwater (see report in the news section on mby homepage). Saw a brief clip on local tv last night, definitely a pleasure boat, think it was a flybridge model. Sea conditions looked to be moderate, would be interested to hear how both engines broke down, maybe ran out of fuel?

HMCG never very explicit about the detail in releases, but I doubt very much that double engine failure had anything to do with the engine make and everything to do with fuel problems, most likely dirt or water contamination...at least that would be odds on favourite. If any of the editorial teams manage to find anything more we'll post it, or you might see more detail, given that there is more time to look for it, in the magazines if such info becomes available from a known source.

Re: Two at once.

I've twice had two engines go.
Once probably a sheet of plastic under the water intakes.
And once. One engine muck and the other got an air leak. All within five minutes of each other.
